Barnsley are set to sell defender Alfie Mawson to Premier League side Swansea City for a club record fee of £5m.
Both clubs have this evening confirmed a fee has been agreed and sources say it will beat the previous record sale of a Barnsley player of £4.5m for Ashley Ward’s move to Blackburn Rovers in 1998.
Red head coach Paul Heckingbottom had confirmed yesterday that the club had knocked back bids for 22 year old Mawson but Swansea’s bid today is believed to be too big to refuse- especially for a player who has played only four Championship games (albeit scoring two goals.)
Mawson will now travel to Wales this weekend to discuss personal terms and will be unavailable for the Reds South Yorkshire derby with Rotherham tomorrow.
