Barnsley are set to start with the 2013-2014 League Two and Scottish Championship’s top scorers against Crawley in two and a half weeks after signing Sam Winnall from Scunthorpe United.
Barnsley manager Danny Wilson has been chasing 23-year-old Winnall, who netted 23 times in 49 appearances to fire the Iron to promotion last season, for a number of weeks and saw an initial bid rejected last week.
However the £500,000 fee received for The Reds own top scorer Chris O’Grady on Saturday enabled them to up their bid and today Scunthorpe accepted and Winnall has arrived on a three-year contract.
Born in Wolverhampton, Winnall started his career with his home club in 2009 but left four years later having failed to make a single appearance for them.
During his time at Molineux he did go out on loan to Burton, Hereford, Inverness and Shrewsbury before signing permanently for Scunthorpe last summer.
And the Glanford Park outfit sensationally unlocked Winnall’s potential as he finished as League Two’s top scorer helping the Iron finish as runners-up to Chesterfield.
Winnall told the club’s official website:
"I'm really pleased to have joined an ambitious club,"
"I can't wait to get the season started, I'm excited about coming here and working under Danny."
