Defender Paul Reid and midfielder Dwayne Mattis are no longer Barnsley F.C players after their contracts were cancelled by mutual consent today.
Reid, 26, captained The Reds to promotion in 2006 and was a mainstay in the defence in 2006-2007 but a red card in the second game of 2007-2008 at Colchester cost him his place in the side to Dennis Souza and Stephen Foster and he finished the season on loan at home-town club Carlisle where he is likely to move back to now.
In total, Reid made 128 appearances for The Reds over four years scoring seven goals.
Mattis meanwhile was signed in January 2007 from Bury for £50,000 but could never establish himself in the team. His debut was a calamitous display in a 1-0 defeat to Preston that month and his other 2006-2007 starts were in a 3-0 defeat to Colchester and a 5-2 humbling by Southampton.
Ironically though his one and only Reds start in 2007-2008 was a man of the match display in the 2-0 Carling Cup defeat at Newcastle United!
He joined Walsall on loan but broke his leg, returning as a sub in Barnsley's 3-0 defeat at Cardiff City on the last day of the season.
In total Mattis made 5 appearances for Barnsley, scoring no goals.
Meanwhile Simon Davey has admitted that Blackpool have triggered a £150,000 release clause in winger Martin Devaney's contract but insisted that does NOT mean he will be sold.
Davey told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:
"It is true that Blackpool have made an offer of £150,000 for Martin and this does trigger a clause in his contract allowing him to speak to them. This clause is standard in the majority of players' contracts and does not mean that we have to sell Martin only that he can speak with a Club who offer that amount.
"We have worked tirelessly in recent years both on and off the pitch at Barnsley Football Club to make sure that we are in a position where we decide who stays and who goes.
"No one player will leave unless we say so. Every player has a valuation and no one will be sold unless a club reaches that. We are not in the business of letting our players go on the cheap".
