Reds chairman Peter Ridsdale is involved in a legal battle with the club's former owner Peter Doyle according to Ian Appleyard in the Yorkshire Post.
Ridsdale has not yet completed payment of last season's £5.5m takeover deal because information needed to complete the club's accounts has not been provided by Doyle.
Both parties are suing each other and a preliminary hearing is due to be heard in Leeds High Court on Monday.
The Yorkshire Post understands that Doyle should have received his penultimate payment for the club five months ago and his final payment in May 2005. The two payments add up to a six figure sum.
However, Barnsley have the protection of a 'warranty' in the contract which means Doyle must pay out if any items included in the sale are missing.
Ridsdale is suing for payment of that warranty on the basis that the club's accounts cannot be completed.
Both Ridsdale and Doyle refused to comment last night.
Doyle, the former Town Mayor, relinquished control to former Leeds United chairman Ridsdale last September. As part of the deal, Ridsdale sold the stadium and surrounding land to wealthy businessman Patrick Cryne and the local council.
Cryne has rejected an opportunity to become a director of the football club but insists that he has not fallen out with Ridsdale.
