Barnsley fans everywhere are today mourning the loss of a true Oakwell legend.
Johnny Steele served Barnsley Football Club in every capacity possible from player to vice president.
Steele joined the club as a player in 1938/39 from Scottish side Ayr United and notched 17 goals in his debut season as The Reds romped to the Division Three (North) title.
Steele also turned out for Barnsley in the Regional League during the Second World War before joining back up with the proper side in 1946.
A knee injury finished his career after making 50 first team appearances for Barnsley scoring 21 goals.
Johnny was handed a coaching role in 1946 and became first team manager in 1960 and held the post for 11 years (nobody to take the Oakwell hotseat since has lasted that long) In 1970 he took on the role of general manager and became Club Secetary until retiring in 1982.
In Johnny's managerial stint between 1960 and 1971 he won 196, drew 147 and lost 215 of his 558 matches in charge. He was also caretaker manager in 1973 and 1978 where he won six, drew eight and nine of 23 matches in charge.
Steele was awarded a testimonial in 1977 which saw a Barnsley side take on a team managed by then England manager Don Revie.
After retiring in 1982 he was appointed onto the Board of Directors where he served for two years before becoming a life vice-president.
Johnny Steele was 91 years old when he died yesterday (14th January 2008)
