Interesting Stats:
The Keith Hill derby! Whilst these two sides have met just four times in the last 35 years it has added spice as Rochdale gaffer Hill faces the club who sacked him in December 2012 for the first time since that harrowing day nearly two years ago when Hill was fired by Barnsley after a 3-1 home defeat to Blackburn left the Reds rock bottom of the Championship with just five wins from 25 matches.
Hill won just 19 of his 75 matches in charge at Oakwell but has claimed 141 victories from 314 games in charge of Rochdale, in two spells and has led them to promotion from League Two in both his stints in charge at Spotland and now into the top six of League One.
The last time these two sides met Hill was in charge of Barnsley.
Tomorrow will be the first league encounter between the two since 1979, and the first one in the third tier of English football since 1972.
In two of the last four seasons that they have met in any competition, Barnsley have gone on to be promoted (1978-1979, 1996-1997)
In the most recent encounters Barnsley and Rochdale have been quite evenly matched with The Reds winning three and losing three of the last six but they have won 21 of the 40 meetings compared to Rochdale’s 10.
There has been just one draw in the last 10 clashes.
Out of the last 13 goals scored in Barnsley/Rochdale clashes, eight have been scored after half -time.
Rochdale have made a flying start to life in League One following their automatic promotion from League Two in May.
Keith Hill’s charges sit in a play-off spot having won five of their last six matches in all competitions, scoring 15 goals.
They have also kept four clean sheets in that run.
Hopefully a good omen for The Reds is the only defeat in those past six matches for Dale came against a South Yorkshire side, Sheffield United.
Dale are the division’s fourth highest scorers having netted 19 times in 10 League One games.
Rochdale have been better away than at their Spotland home however, winning just two of their five home matches, and scoring just six goals.
Former Barnsley midfielder Matty Done has netted five goals in his last six games for Rochdale.
