Southend manager Chris Powell said:

The boys are obviously low on confidence with regards to our league results and tonight was a big game for us, and they gave me everything.

I know fans will say “it’s 11 v 10” but the players are nervy. They’re going to be because of the position we’re in and what’s been happening. It’s almost like we needed a result and it didn’t matter how it came.

We had a good start, terrific cross and header by Tim Dieng and I thought we were the team in the ascendancy. Second-half we knew they’d throw caution to the wind and what we wanted to do was just to make that extra man count…because you’ve got the extra man eventually they will open up and that happened for the goal.

I’m pleased for Sam Mantom, I thought he led by example. I think I’ll say to him we’re playing Scunthorpe every week because he seemed to be determined to make the box and get in there.

They’re a young team and they’ve been hurting and they gave me everything – I will always thank them for their efforts – but they were desperate to get a result for everyone, desperate for themselves and gladly, they got it.
