Werling, 26, has signed for the Terriers after being released by German 3rd division side Erzgebirge Aue in the summer.
The German, referred to as the Roberto Carlos of Barnsley due to his tracer bullet of a shot scored one goal in 18 appearances for the Reds on loan from Turkish side Sakaryspor.
Terriers manager Lee Clark told www.htafc.com about first spotting Werling at Newcastle last season:
"I first came across him when he was playing for Barnsley playing against Newcastle in a Carling Cup tie.
"Barnsley put up a good show that night and he was one of their star players and I've kept an eye on his career since then."
Clark added:
"He's a player I've tracked for a while, since he was at Barnsley in fact.
"I was delighted to have the chance to have a good look at him in training and at Blackburn.
"He's good on the ball, strong, athletic and quick, and he's played at a higher level than League One in this country."
