The Reds have failed with a bid to sign Grimsby Town's leading scorer Michael Boulding.
Tykes make unsuccessful bid for Boulding
The former Aston Villa player has a clause in his contract that allows him to speak to clubs who bid over £45,000 for him, but Mariners chairman Peter Furneaux revealed that his Tykes counterpart Peter Ridsdale's offer was nowhere near high enough.
"We will not be exploited by Barnsley or any football club who think they can make offers such as the one they made for Michael," Furneaux said.
"Peter Ridsdale is an experienced man but what he and Barnsley offered was nowhere near what the market value is for a player of Michael Boulding's ability."
