Reds defender Tony Vaughan was involved in a car accident on his way home from Oakwell on Wednesday.
He was already struggling with a groin injury that could sideline him for the rest of the season but that has now been compounded by whiplash.
Reds physio, Rick Holden told the official Barnsley FC website: "Tony got a bang on his knee and is suffering from a bit of whiplash today.
"His groin injury that main worry. It is a wear and tear injury that is common in footballers and he has some scar tissue around his gracilis muscles. The best case scenario is that he has a couple of steroid injections to loosen up the scar tissue around the muscles and with rest and rehab he should be ok.
"The worst case is that he would need an operation to remove the tissue and that could keep him out for three months".
Meanwhile striker Barry Conlon is still struggling with a groin problem.
The 26-year-old has missed more than two months with problems surrounding his groin area and it is still causing him problems despite an operation on a double sports hernia.
Rick Holden told the official Barnsley FC website: "Barry's problems have proven to be a lot more complicated. It appears as though he has a wear and tear injury to his gracilis muscle which has been causing him to over compensate on his adductor brevis.
"This over compensation has caused the adductor brevis to tear. We have given him an injection to try and loosen up gracilis and we will have to wait and see how that helps him.
"We are not holding out much hope for him this season."
