Charlton’s 1-0 win at Leeds in midweek had pushed Barnsley three points away from safety but this 0-0 draw with Brighton has narrowed that to two points with the Addicks losing at home to Reading.
Barnsley have now strung together three matches without defeat for only the second time this season. Their best run is four without reverse (W1 D3) back in October/November.
However this blank means The Reds have gone three matches at Oakwell without scoring for the first time in exactly two years. April 2012 was the last time it happened, when they failed to score in any of their final three home games of 2011-2012. The final game of that run ironically was a goal-less draw with Brighton.
Kelvin Etuhu was sent off for the first time in his career. It is Barnsley’s sixth red card of the season, the most they have received in one season for six years since they also received six in 2007-2008.
It’s the first time Barnsley have had a player sent off and not ending up losing in seven games. The last time it happened, Bobby Hassell was shown a red card but Barnsley defeated Bristol City 1-0 in September 2012.
Brighton’s poor record at Oakwell continued, they have now won just one of their last 14 visits and none of the last four.
The Seagulls also fell five points off the play-off places after a fifth game without a win, their joint worst run of the season.
This season is the first time since 1989-1990 that The Reds have taken as many as four points off Brighton in one campaign.
The fight for survival has intensified. Although, as mentioned before, Barnsley closed the gap on Charlton, the two sides below them, Millwall and Yeovil both won away from home.
Millwall won for the first time in six matches and only the second time in 14, 2-1 at Nottingham Forest, whilst Yeovil, who Barnsley hammered 4-1 last weekend, won 1-0 at Blackpool for their first win in seven. Just three points now separate the bottom four sides.
