Barnsley 0-1 Brentford

Last updated : 03 December 2020 By Rob Miles

A first home defeat for Valerian Ismael as Barnsley lost for only the second time in nine outings and were beaten at Oakwell for only the second time in 2020-2021.

Indeed this was only Barnsley’s second defeat in 11 home league games (W5 D4)

Barnsley are yet to concede a first half goal in their eight home games this season (all comps) and have actually gone 15 home games without conceding a first half Oakwell goal. The last opponent to score before the break at Oakwell was Josh Windass for Sheffield Wednesday in February.

This was Barnsley’s fifth 0-0 half time in 13 league outings in 2020-2021.

Ivan Toney grabbed the all important winner after 66 minutes, the second ex Barnsley player to score against the Reds this season after Jack Hunt for Bristol City.

Tony made 20 appearances for Barnsley during a loan spell from Newcastle in 2015-2016 and netted only twice – both away from home. He made 10 appearances at Oakwell without netting.

Barnsley have now failed to win any of their last 62 Championship matches when conceding first with this the 50th defeat in that run (D12) since defeating Leeds 3-2 in January 2017.

Prior to mid October Alex Mowatt had played every minute of every league game in 2020 (27 successive full games) however he has now been substituted in three of the last seven and has been brought off in back to back games for the first time since December 2019.

Ismael made three substitutions at the same time (71st minute) the first time the Reds have made this many changes in the same minute since Gerhard Struber made three at half time in a 4-0 defeat at Stoke in July.

This was only Barnsley’s third defeat in the last seven meetings with Brentford, both of which have come at Oakwell, and the Bees have won on successive visits for the first time since winning 2-0 in 1952 and then again on their next visit seven years later, 2-1 in 1959.

In between these back to back wins Brentford had won only three of 20 visits.

Barnsley have won only two of their last 18 Championship games on a Tuesday, both coming in 2020 against Blackburn in June and QPR in October.

Barnsley had 32% of the ball in this game, their lowest amount at Oakwell for over four years, since also only have 32% against Fulham in October 2016.

Barnsley managed only one shot on target, their lowest at Oakwell since failing to hit the target at all against Cardiff in March.

"I think we looked very solid, structured and mature in more or less everything we did.

"I loved the patience in the first half because Barnsley are a very good side and I'm very impressed with them.

"They have made it unbelievably difficult for a lot of teams and they press with an extreme intensity."
