The indifferent home form continues as Barnsley followed up an impressive South Yorkshire derby victory at Oakwell eight days previously with a poor 1-0 defeat to a Wigan side who had failed to win any of their last six games in all competitions and picked up only their second away league victory of the season whilst inflicting on the Reds their second home reverse.
This defeat brought to an end Barnsley's five match unbeaten league run and was the first time they have failed to score at Oakwell this season in any competition.
Barnsley had scored twice in each of their previous three home league games and five of seven however failed to net in front of their own supporters for the first time for 11 home games - last drawing a blank in a 2-0 defeat to Cambridge on the 29th March.
It is only the third time in 27 home games (all comps) that Barnsley have failed to net.
This was the first time Barnsley have lost 1-0 at home since the 30th September 2023 against Blackpool.
After making only one substitution in two of the last three games Darrell Clarke made a quadruple change after 57 minutes here, the second time he has made a quadruple change this season and ironically both have been against Wigan, with the other coming in the League Cup back in August.
Captain Luca Connell returned from suspension and was promptly booked again for the seventh time this season. He has been yellow carded in each of his last three appearances and in four of the last five.
Barnsley have now been shown 48 cards of some colour so far in 2024-2025 (all comps), and including the two shown against Wigan (to Connell and Donovan Pines) 34 have been shown in the second half (70.8%)
Barnsley have gone 1-0 down in successive league games for only the second time this season.
It is however the first time this season that Barnsley have gone two games in a row (in all comps) whereby neither team has managed to net at least twice.
Barnsley have failed to win any of their last 10 league games in which they have conceded the first goal (including playoffs) with this the seventh defeat in that run. Four of those seven defeats have occurred this season.
Barnsley have now won only two of their last 15 home league games (including play-offs) W2 D8 L5.
However only losing two of their first eight home league games of a season is their best start since 2018-2019 when they remained unbeaten at Oakwell all season.
Barnsley’s wretched home record against Wigan continues with this victory for the Latics continuing their unbeaten league run at Oakwell which now stands at nine games, five of which they have won.
The Reds have only ever beaten Wigan once on their own patch and that was in the very first meeting in November 1954, 3-2 in the FA Cup First Round.
This defeat did end a run of three successive draws between the sides at Oakwell.
Only one side has scored in five of the last six Oakwell meetings – that being Wigan meaning they have kept five clean sheets and indeed have only ever conceded in three of their 10 trips.
Overall though this was Barnsley’s first defeat in six meetings (W2 D3 L1)
They have scored one goal or less in five of the last six meetings home or away.
Despite not scoring Barnsley had 20 shots in total, their joint most this season – it has occurred on four occasions, two of them v Wigan.
Wigan scored with their only effort on target, the first opponents to do this since… yep you guessed it, Wigan in the corresponding Oakwell fixture last season.
The total of five shots on target is the lowest in a Barnsley game this season and lowest since Burton away in April (also 5)
