Barnsley have now lost three league games in a row- for the first time since their eight game streak last season and they have now lost five of the last six since the thumping 4-0 win at Wolves.
They have lost back-to-back home games for the first tine since last November.
The Reds failed to score for only the second time this season and the first time at Oakwell since a 0-0 draw with Scunthorpe in March.
Barnsley were drawing 0-0 at half time and went on to lose for the first time since the 4-2 defeat at Ipswich on the opening day.
Barnsley failed to win a single corner last night- for the first since February 2015 (1-0 win at Scunthorpe) Incredibly it is the first time they have failed to win a corner at Oakwell for SIX years, since a 2-0 defeat to Leicester in November 2010.
There were 18,597 in attendance last night, Oakwell’s biggest crowd since 20,309 witnessed a 5-2 win over Leeds in September 2010. It is the biggest Oakwell attendance against a non Yorkshire opponent since Newcastle were last in town- December 2009- when 20,079 saw a 2-2 draw.
Speaking of Newcastle visits to Oakwell this was their first win here in 10 league visits, stretching back to 1983 and only their second ever in the league (although they have won two League Cup ties at Oakwell in 2001 and 1994)
Barnsley fell behind in the 49th minute last night (after the 46th minute on Saturday) meaning they have now conceded five times in the first five minutes of the second half this season.
After Barnsley’s fine start to the season where they won five of their first seven, last night was their seventh defeat of 2016-2017, only bottom side Rotherham (9) have lost more in the Championship.
