Barnsley 0-3 Carlisle United

Last updated : 14 August 2019 By Rob Miles

Barnsley have now exited at the First Round stage in the League Cup in four of the past five seasons.

It is however the first time they have been knocked out of this cup by a fourth tier side since 2011-2012 when Morecambe won 2-0 at Oakwell.

This is their heaviest defeat to a fourth tier side since Macclesfield Town triumphed 4-1 in the First Round of the League Cup in 2002-2003.

This result also brings to an end the incredible unbeaten home record under Daniel Stendel. The German head coach has now suffered his first loss at Oakwell in his 32nd game here (W19 D12 L1),

Carlisle became only the second opposing team to open the scoring at Oakwell in 11 games, although two of those have come in the last three matches at the stadium (also Blackpool in April)

It was the first time Barnsley have conceded the opening goal in a League Cup First Round tie since 2014-2015 (a 2-0 defeat to Crewe) and the first time they have been behind at half-time since that game.

The Reds conceded three goals at home for the first time since January 2018 - a 3-1 defeat to Fulham (excluding Under 21 opponents)

Indeed it is their heaviest home defeat in any competition since December 2017 - 3-0 v Derby.

Jack Bridge's goal to make it 2-0 was the first goal Barnsley have conceded from the penalty spot since February (v Wycombe)

Barnsley have lost back to back games for the first time since October 2018 but the first time they have lost back to back without scoring since a run of three in November 2017 (v Cardiff, Leeds, Reading)

Carlisle are now unbeaten in their last six away League Cup ties against teams from a higher division, although they were eliminated on penalties by Liverpool in 2015 and Derby in 2016.

Barnsley had an incredible 71% ball possession, the most by any team in a Barnsley match since Tottenham had 73% in a League Cup tie in September 2017.

There were 16 on target shots in the game, the most in a Barnsley game since the opening match of 2018-2019 (also 16)

Carlisle manager Steven Pressley said:
“It’s an amazing performance and it shouldn’t be underestimated,” he said. “They made some changes, but they had a really strong team out; it was a Championship team.

“Although they had a couple of moments in the game, I thought the score wasn’t actually a true reflection and we could have won by more. We had a few cleared off the line and we hit the post and the bar, so the players should be really proud of themselves.”
