Barnsley’s long unbeaten home League One record came to a crashing halt as Wycombe won at Oakwell for the first time in their history.
It is Barnsley’s first League One Oakwell defeat since the 9th April 2016 when they lost 2-1 to Chesterfield. They had won 19 and drew nine since including an unbeaten season in 2018-2019.
This was Barnsley’s biggest third tier defeat since August 2015 when they lost 3-0 at Rochdale and their biggest Oakwell reverse at this level since September 2014 when they were defeated 3-0 by Swindon.
Barnsley have lost three of their opening five league games for the first since 2020-2021 when they lost three of the first four but the first time at this level since 1979-1980 when like this season they had won two and lost three.
Barnsley lost 3-0 straight after winning 3-0, it is the second time this season they have had the same scoreline but for the opposite teams as they started with a 1-0 defeat at Plymouth but then defeated Cheltenham by the same scoreline.
As mentioned before this was Barnsley’s first home defeat against Wycombe and indeed only the second overall (W4 D3 L2)
It is also the most goals Wycombe have netted in a match against Barnsley.
Barnsley had 56% ball possession, the first time they have lost when having the majority of possession since Peterborough at home in April.
There were a total of 13 shots on target, the most in a Barnsley game since the final home game of 2021-2022.
James Norwood is the first substitute to be booked since Liam Kitching against Middlesbrough in February.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth said:
“I’m delighted for the fans, they never stopped singing. After we got the resilience together and then got first goal, Barnsley opened up and we could’ve had a few more goals.
“I’m really pleased for the boys, I think they got what they deserved.
“I want to say thank you to the owners and the chairman for backing me through the three-game losing streak.
“There is a real backing and togetherness, we live off that and I think that’s really important.”
