More festive dropped points for Barnsley as they failed to win after going 1-0 up two games in a row for the second time this season and first since August when they drew 1-1 with Bristol Rovers and then lost 3-1 to Peterborough.
It means the Reds have drawn two league games in a row for the first time since March 2022
Barnsley are now unbeaten in eight league matches (W4 D4) and have lost only one of the last 14 (W7 D6)
This was Barnsley's seventh league draw of the season, only one less than in the whole of 2022-2023.
Barnsley's goal came via top scorer Devante Cole who bagged his 14th of the season. It is Barnsley's first league goal in first half stoppage time since the 22nd April 2023 against Oxford.
Wigan scored with their only shot on target - the first opponent to do this since Bolton in the first leg of the play-offs last season and the first in the regular season since Fleetwood in December 2022.
Wigan have only managed one shot on target in both meetings with Barnsley this season.
Luca Connell picked up a yellow card for the fourth successive game.
Barnsley have now failed to win their opening match of a calendar year for six years - last doing so 1-0 at Sunderland in 2018. This draw did however end a run of four successive defeats at the start of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Barnsley are now unbeaten in the last four meetings with Wigan however three have been draws.
This was the first time that Wigan have scored in those four meetings.
Barnsley are still yet to win a league meeting at Oakwell between the two sides (D4 L4) with this the third successive stalemate. Barnsley's only home win against the Latics was the very first meeting there in the first round of the FA Cup in November 1954 (3-2)
Both teams had equal 50% ball possession in this game, the second time it has occurred in a Barnsley match this season (also at Leyton Orient in October) but the first time at Oakwell since the final home game of 2022-2023 against Peterborough.
