Barnsley 2-0 Burton Albion

Last updated : 18 September 2023 By Rob Miles

Barnsley made it four successive wins in all competitions and three in a row in the league all by a 2-0 scoreline, the first time they have won four games in a row by the same score in their history whilst it is the first time they have won three in a row in the league by the same score since a trio of 1-0 wins against Scunthorpe, Gillingham and Coventry in February/March 2015.

It is the first time they have won four games in a row all with clean sheets since another run of four in November/December 2004 (1-0, 2-0, 1-0, 4-0)

This was Barnsley’s fourth league win of the season and all have been accompanied by a clean sheet, the second successive season this has occurred.

Devante Cole was at the double making it eight goals in seven league games in 2023-2024, he is now three clear as the division’s leading marksman.

Cole is the first Barnsley player to score in four successive league games since Kieffer Moore in January 2019.

It is the 12th time he has netted the first goal of a League One match since the start of last season. They have now gone on to win 18 of the last 19 matches (all comps) in which Cole has scored.

Barnsley are the current League One top scorers having netted 16 goals in seven games (three more than the next most - Bolton)

Amongst EFL sides only Swindon (22), Wrexham (20) and Crewe (19) have scored more than Barnsley.

Barnsley have now scored the MOST goals of any EFL team in 2023 with Cole’s second against Burton their 68th, one more than Ipswich.

The Reds also have the League One’s best goal difference (9) with only Swindon (11) enjoying a better one in the EFL.

This is the first time Barnsley have scored in their opening nine games

of a season in all competitions since 2016-2017 when they also netted in the first nine.

There were no bookings in a Barnsley league match for the first time in 2023-2024 and first time since the first leg of the play-offs at Bolton.

There were only a total of four shots on target in the game, the lowest in a Barnsley match since Lincoln away on the 18th April (2)

Barnsley’s total of three is their lowest at Oakwell since the final regular game of 2022-2023 against Peterborough (2)

Barnsley failed to win a single corner for the first time since the 25th February 2022 at Nottingham Forest and the first time at Oakwell since the 4th December 2021 against Huddersfield.

The overall total of two corners is the lowest in a Barnsley game since the 24th November 2021 against Swansea (also 2)

This was only Barnsley’s second win in the last six meetings with Burton (both have been 2-0 at Oakwell in the last two seasons) After going unbeaten in the first six meetings (W3 D3) the Reds have only won two of the subsequent six (W2 D1 L3)

This was Barnsley’s seventh clean sheet in 12 meetings with Burton, five of which have come at Oakwell with the Brewers failing to score in each of their past three visits.
