Barnsley opened the scoring for only the fourth time in nine league games this season and led at half time for only the fourth time too.
In three of the four times Barnsley have opened the scoring they have also led at the break.
The Reds led by two goals at half time for the first time since December 2014 when they were two goals to the good against Leyton Orient and like yesterday held on for a 2-0 success.
13 of Barnsley’s last 16 goals in all competitions have been scored by Marley Watkins, Lewin Nyatanga, Conor Hourihane or Sam Winnall.
At least one of those quartet have scored in eight of Barnsley’s 12 games this season.
Ben Pearson gave The Reds the lead, his second goal for the club and his first since January when he netted in a 2-1 home win against Port Vale.
For the second home game in a row, Barnsley had five shots on target. Prior to this each of the previous four had yielded no more than two.
Also, the last home game was the first time in 14 home games that Barnsley had scored two first half goals, they did it again yesterday.
Gillingham’s miserable record at Oakwell continued, The Gills have won only one of their 15 visits now and have now lost each of their last five.
This was Barnsley’s sixth successive win over Gillingham home and away and they have kept clean sheets in four of the last five.
Pearson’s strike was Barnsley’s 50th goal against Gillingham in just 30 meetings.
Barnsley were only the second team to score twice against Gillingham this season, Colchester were the first last weekend.
Barnsley though are the FIRST team to stop Gillingham scoring this season in League One.
Sam Winnall’s 45th minute effort gave The Reds a positive goal difference to take into October. The first time this has happened since 2004-2005 (also +1)
