Barnsley got their EFL Trophy campaign up and running with a late win over Newcastle United’s kids.
They didn’t take the lead until the 79th minute which is the latest Barnsley have gone 1-0 up in a game since the EFL Cup win over Middlesbrough in August with the one goal winner coming after 93 minutes.
It is the latest Barnsley have gone 1-0 up and then gone on to score a second goal since the 21st November 2020 when they defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in the Championship with goals after 85 and 88 minutes.
Barnsley have now lost only one of their last 15 EFL Trophy matches (excluding penalty shootouts) W8 D6 – the 3-0 loss to Lincoln in their previous outing.
This was Barnsley’s first EFL Trophy match to be goal-less at half time since the Northern Final Second Leg in 2016 (this is their seventh EFL Trophy match since)
Barnsley have now gained back to back wins with back to back clean sheets twice in 2022-2023 (1-0 v Cheltenham in the league and 1-0 v Middlesbrough in the cup and now 3-0 v Cambridge in the league and 2-0 v Newcastle Academy) the first time it has occurred twice in a season since occurring four times in 2020-2021.
The Reds are unbeaten in four matches in all competitions (W3 D1) for the first time since a run of ten between 14th February 2021 and 17th March 2021 (W9 D1)
This was Barnsley’s sixth clean sheet of the season (all comps), just one less than they managed in the whole of 2021-2022.
This was also Barnsley’s sixth win in all competitions this season, the first time their first six victories have all been accompanied by clean sheets since 2020-2021 (also first six)
Barnsley had seven shots on target their most in a match since the 18th April v Peterborough (11)
Newcastle failed to win a single corner, the first time a Barnsley opponent has not had a corner since Cardiff on the 2nd February.
