Barnsley 2-1 Shrewsbury Town

Last updated : 12 April 2023 By Rob Miles

Barnsley made it a grEIGHT record at Oakwell as they won an eighth successive home league game, the first time they have achieved such a feat since a nine game run in 1969 (the final five home games of 1968-69 and first four of 1969-1970)

Each of those eight victories have been achieved by scoring at least twice, netting three on four occasions, four twice and five once.

This was their 15th league home victory of the season, only Plymouth (17) have won more and it equals the amount they won in their last League One promotion winning season of 2018-2019 – a campaign where they remained undefeated at Oakwell.

This was Barnsley's 24th league victory of the season (from 40 games), only in four of their previous 123 years as a league side have they won more. (1933-1934, 27, 1938-1939, 30, 1954-1955, 30, 2018-2019, 26)

Devante Cole scored in a 2022-2023 game for the 12th time (all comps) and the Reds have won all 12 games.

Cole has now scored 24 goals for Barnsley since making his initial debut in August 2014, 21 of which have come at Oakwell.

Barnsley have now won each of their last 13 league games in which they have opened the scoring, last failing to do so on Boxing Day at Accrington Stanley (1-1) and have won 21 of the last 22 occasions. They are unbeaten in their last 26 league matches in which they have opened the scoring (W24 D2) last losing from a 1-0 lead in the final home game of 2021-2022 against Preston (1-3)

With six games to go Barnsley have 78 points, one point less than at this stage of their automatic promotion winning League One campaign of 2018-2019.

Barnsley have now gone 50 league matches without being awarded a penalty. It last occurred on the 12th March 2022 when Carlton Morris scored from 12 yards v Fulham.

Both Barnsley’s goals came in the final five minutes of the half netting after 40 and 45+2 minutes, it is only the third game this season in which Barnsley have netted during this time frame and two of those have been via Cole netting after 45+2 – Liam Kitching netted against Port Vale at home after 43 minutes.

Shrewsbury’s consolation goal came in second half injury time, only the second time there have been goals in both added times of a Barnsley match (the 4-1 victory against Derby being the other)

Barnsley led by at least two goals at half time for the seventh time in the league this season, five of which have come in the last 11 games.

Nicky Cadden became the second Barnsley player this season to both score and be red carded following Max Watters against Cambridge in February.

Cadden’s red was Barnsley’s fifth of the season, their most in a season since also accruing five in 2016-2017.

It was the first red card of Cadden’s career.

This was the first game in which both Barnsley and their opponents had a man sent off since the 19th August 2017 against Sheffield United.

In 2022-2023 Barnsley have won three of the five matches in which they have finished with ten men.

Killian Phillips sending off for Shrewsbury was the first opponent red in 2022-2023 and first since the 29th January 2022 when Gary Cahill was sent off for Bournemouth.

Mads Andersen was also yellow carded, the skipper’s 11th booking of the season and fifth in his last nine appearances.

Barnsley have won four of their last six Easter Monday fixtures (D1 L1)

Nicky Cadden has now scored five times for the Reds and they have won four of those games – last time out at Burton being the only exception.

It is the second time this season Cadden has netted in successive matches, also doing so v Portsmouth and Plymouth last month.

Barnsley have now won eight of their last 11 meetings with the Shrews, including each of the last three.

They are the fifth club they have completed a league double over in 2022-2023 after Fleetwood, Cambridge, Cheltenham and Sheffield Wednesday.

Four of those aforementioned eight wins in 11 have been by a 2-1 scoreline, whilst one of Shrewsbury’s two wins in this sequence was also 2-1.

Each of the last three meetings at Oakwell have finished 2-1 with Barnsley winning twice.

The Reds have won eight of the last nine Oakwell clashes (L1), four of them 2-1.

This was Barnsley’s 22nd victory against Shrewsbury, meaning they have won exactly half of the 44 meetings, losing 13.

Barnsley have completed a league double over Shrewsbury in two of the last four years they have met however the last occasion was 1988-1989.

They have in total completed a league double over Shrewsbury on five occasions.
