The wretched home run continues as Barnsley threw away a 2-0 lead at Oakwell for the second time in a week and have now failed to win any of their last 10 home games in all competitions. (D5 L5)
It is their longest run without victory in front of their own supporters since a run of 12 between November 2017 and March 2018 (D6 L6)
Barnsley have failed to win either of their first two home league games of a season for the first time since 2020-2021 and the first time at third tier level since 1970-1971.
Including the comeback Bristol Street Motors Trophy defeat in midweek, Barnsley have failed to win any of their first three home games of a season in all competitions for the first time since 2013-2014 when they didn’t win until the fifth Oakwell match.
It is the third time (all competitions) Barnsley have let a 2-0 lead slip in 2024 (also v Bolton in March, and Manchester United Under 21s on Tuesday)
The Reds looked to be coasting when Adam Phillips put them 2-0 up in the 46th minute, the first time they have scored in the first minute of the second half since the 8th August 2017 when Tom Bradshaw did so against Morecambe in the League Cup but it is the first time in a league game since the 31st January 2015 when Ben Pearson netted against Port Vale.
Remarkably they have now scored after 46, 47 and 48 minutes in 2024-2025 so far.
Barnsley’s first three league games have produced one win, one draw and one defeat for the second successive season and it has occurred in three of the last four.
Barnsley have now conceded in 15 successive games in all competitions, their longest run without a clean sheet since a run of 18 between 15th September 2019 and 26th December 2019.
They have conceded in their first five games of a season for the first time since 2017-2018 (also first five)
Conor Hourihane made his first league start for Barnsley since the 21st January 2017 - he was replaced after 56minutes, the first time he has been subbed off in a league game for the Reds since the 5th September 2015, ending a run of 63 completed league games in a row when starting.
There were only five corners in the game the lowest in a Barnsley match for 14 matches since the home game with Cambridge on the 29th March (3)
Josh Earl has now been booked in both home league games this season, he was also the last Barnsley player to be yellow carded in successive home games, v Cheltenham and Cambridge back in March.
Kyran Lofthouse’s 90+5 yellow card is Barnsley’s latest booking since last season’s home meeting with Northampton when Herbie Kane was booked after 90+6.
Barnsley have both scored and conceded five goals so far in League One this season to give them a neutral goal difference of 0 – one of four teams who have both scored and conceded the same amount.
It is the first time Barnsley have both scored and conceded in their opening five games of a seaso since 2006-2007 when they did so in the first eight.
Barnsley are unbeaten in three meetings with Northampton (W1 D2) but have won only one of the last seven (W1 D2 L3)
The away side has now scored twice in three of the last four meetings and four of the last six.
However this was the first time in nine clashes that the home side had scored more than once.
Barnsley and Northampton have drawn successive meetings for the first time ever.
