Barnsley will be in the hat for the FA Cup Third Round draw for the seventh successive season after a comprehensive win over League Two Crewe Alexandra.
In five of those seven seasons Barnsley did not come into the cup until the third round with this the second successive time they have progressed through the first and second rounds.
Overall Barnsley have appeared in the third round in 16 of the last 17 seasons (including this one) with the one exception being a first round 1-0 defeat to non-league Altrincham in 2015-2016.
In those 17 seasons Barnsley have won 19 of the 41 ties they have played (D5 L17)
This was Barnsley’s biggest FA Cup victory since defeating Notts County 4-0 in the First Round in 2018-2019.
Adam Phillips continued his strong recent form for the Reds as he netted his fourth goal in his last five appearances. After also scoring in the First Round win at Bolton he becomes the first Barnsley player to score in successive FA Cup ties since Conor Chaplin in 2019-2020.
The victory was secured by a penalty from Josh Benson, Barnsley’s first goal from the spot this season and first since Carlton Morris against Fulham in March.
It is Barnsley’s first penalty goal in the FA Cup since Cauley Woodrow netted one against Tranmere in the third round of 2020-2021.
This was the sixth time Barnsley have scored 3+ goals in a game this season (all comps) the most in a season since 2018-2019 (14)
It is the first time they have scored at least three goals in successive home games since August/September 2017 when they defeated Sunderland 3-0 in the Championship and then Derby 3-2 in the EFL Cup.
Jack Walton kept only his third clean sheet in his last 18 appearances for the club and all three have come in the cups (2 EFL, 1 FA)

Both of the last two meetings have come in the FA Cup and Barnsley have scored three on both occasions (also 3-1 at Crewe in 2020)

Crewe manager Lee Bell said:
"I thought we'd be able to play a bit more, in terms of finding the forward players with the ball.
"To concede a scrappy first goal is something we must eradicate. It changed their mentality going into half-time.
"We dealt with them well, and their goals were avoidable. We wanted the lads to keep discipline. Chasing the ball against good players means you can get picked off quite easily.
"We reminded them about keeping shape, keeping courage when they get the football and not just running around aimlessly to show effort. We have to know what we are and keep to it."
