These first half goals are like buses. On Tuesday night, The Reds managed a brace before half-time for the first time in 38 matches, and they managed to do it again four days later!
It is the first time The Reds have gone 1-0 up this season.
Barnsley led at half-time for the first time in nine matches.
It is the first time they have led by as much as 2-0 at half time for 40 matches! They led Middlesbrough 3-0 at the break on the 19th October last year before eventually winning 3-2.
If The Reds had lost today they would have set a club record of six successive home defeats but this 4-1 victory gives them their first success at Oakwell in nine matches.
It is Barnsley’s biggest home win since they beat Leeds 4-1 on New Year’s Eve 2011. That is also the last time they scored four goals at Oakwell.
The Reds have won on consecutive Saturdays for the first time in 18 months.
The Reds have now scored eight goals in their four league matches this season. They are the division’s highest scorers.
The win puts Barnsley into fifth place in the table!
Four different players scored for Barnsley today, the first time this has happened since Jim O’Brien, Jacob Butterfield, Ricardo Vaz Te and Craig Davies all scored in a 4-3 win at Peterborough in December 2011.
It continues Barnsley’s strong home record against Gillingham who have now won just once in 14 visits.
This is also their second 4-1 thumping at Oakwell from their last three trips and they have conceded 11 goals in their last four visits.
Gillingham failed to score twice in a game for the first time this season but Danny Kedwell netted for the third game in a row and he has only failed to score in ONE of the Gills’ matches so far in 2014-2015.
We always have to throw a negative in (it’s the law supporting Barnsley) and The Reds have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their first five games of the season for the first time in seven years.
Unfortunately only 9,163 supporters were there to see this terrific win, Barnsley’s lowest home attendance since the 1st of October 2013. That was on a Tuesday night, it is The Reds lowest Saturday home gate since 9,076 attended for the 1-0 win over Watford on the 16th March 2013.
Captain Martin Cranie was booked for the third game in a row.
