Blackpool 1-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 20 October 2024 By Rob Miles

Barnsley ended a run of three league games without a victory as they kept their strong away start up to move within four goals of the play-off places.

The Reds have the joint best away record in the division (alongside league leaders Birmingham) with this their fourth victory from six on the road in 2024-2025.

This is in complete contrast to their record at Oakwell where they have won only one of five (albeit they have lost only once at Oakwell compared with twice on the road)

Each of Barnsley’s last three league victories have been by a 2-1 scoreline and four of their five league victories this season have finished this way (the other being a 3-0 win at Crawley)

This was Barnsley’s 11th league game of the season, five of which have now finished 2-1 as they also lost to Mansfield by this scoreline on the opening night.

In all competitions they have now played 16 games and at least one team has netted exactly two goals on 10 occasions (5x2-1, 2x2-0, 2x2-2 and 1x3-2)

Three of Barnsley’s four 2-1 wins have now seen them take the lead, be pegged back before finding a winner, Davis Keillor-Dunn has opened the scoring in two of them, Marc Roberts has scored a late winner in two and two have also been secured in the last minute.

Barnsley have now won five league games by scoring the winner in the 90th minute or later since returning to League One in 2022, three of which have come away from home.

Each of Barnsley’s last two victories have come on the road and being won with a goal in the 90th minute or later.

Roberts is the first defender to score a last minute away winner for the Reds since Clarke Oduor famously at Brentford on the final day of 2019-2020 which kept Barnsley in the Championship, and the first centre half since Lewin Nyatanga at Millwall in August 2015.

Since making his first Barnsley debut in August 2015 Roberts has scored in eight different matches, Barnsley have now won six of them (D1 L1) and four of those victories have come away from home.

This was Barnsley’s 26th away league victory since returning to League One – the exact same amount as they have won at Oakwell in that time.

Fabio Jalo was shown a yellow card for the third successive league game which means a Reds substitute has now been booked in nine of Barnsley's 11 league games so far this season including each of the last four.

It was the seventh booking for a Barnsley player in the 90th minute or later this season in all competitions.

Luca Connell set up the Reds winner, his third assist of the season, putting him top of the Barnsley assist table in 2024-2025.

Remarkably there has been a goal in the 89th minute or later in each of Barnsley’s last six games in all competitions, coming in the 90th minute or later in five of those.

There has been 10 goals scored in the 80th minute or later in Barnsley last eight games in all competitions (out of 26 in total in that time – 38%)

This win ended a run of five straight defeats against Blackpool.

Each of the last 10 meetings have been decided by a win or defeat (W3 L7)

One team has scored at least twice in each of the last three meetings and four of the last five.

This result ended a run of three straight defeats for Barnsley at Bloomfield Road with this only their second win there in nine visits stretching back to 2013.

Three of Barnsley’s last four wins at Bloomfield Road have finished 2-1.

There has been a total of 28 shots in each of Barnsley’s last two league games.

And a total of seven on target in each of Barnsley’s last two in all competitions.
