Barnsley have advanced from the first round of the FA Cup for the fourth time in the last five seasons they have competed in this round – the one exception being a 1-0 defeat at non-league Altrincham in 2015-2016.
In any round this only Barnsley’s sixth away win in 13 such ties.
Barnsley opened the scoring courtesy of an own goal – the first time they have benefited in this way in the FA Cup since the Third Round of 1992-1993 when an own goal from Leicester’s Mike Whitlow helped the Reds to a 2-2 draw - the replay would finish 1-1 and Barnsley won on penalties.
The og from Ricardo Santos came after just six minutes, the earliest Barnsley have scored in the FA Cup since the Third Round of 2019-2020 when Jacob Brown gave them the lead at Crewe after three minutes in a 3-1 win.
Adam Phillips doubled the advantage after 33 minutes, the earliest Barnsley have been two goals ahead in the FA Cup since the Fifth Round of 2012-2013 when they led 2-0 at MK Dons after 19minutes in a 3-1 win.
This was Barnsley’s sixth away win of the season (all comps) – 3 league, 1 league cup, 1 EFL Trophy, 1 FA Cup –the most they have won before the New Year of a season since winning eight before the start of 2019 in 2018-2019.
It was their fourth cup victory so far this season – the last time they won more in a season was in 2007-2008 when they famously reached the FA Cup Semi-Finals. That campaign they won four FA Cup and one League Cup tie.
They have won four cup ties on four other occasions since (2012-2013, 2015-2016, 2018-2019, 2020-2021)
Jordan Williams set up Phillips crucial winning goal, his fourth assist of the season, putting him top of the Reds assist charts so far this season.
There were six players booked in this game (5 for Barnsley) the most joint most yellow cards in a Barnsley game this season (also at Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich)
It is the first time Barnsley have received as many as five yellow cards in a game since the 15th September 2021 at Stoke.
Jack Walton was one of those booked, the first time a Barnsley goalkeeper has been yellow carded since Brad Collins against Middlesbrough on the 26th February.
It is the third time Walton has been booked in his Barnsley career.
This was Walton’s sixth appearance of the season, all have been in cup matches and he has kept just one clean sheet.
This was Barnsley’s first win against Bolton in FOURTEEN league and cup meetings, the last time they had defeated the Trotters was when both were Premier League teams in 1997-1998 when they beat them twice in three meetings that season (1 in the league and 1 in the FA Cup), indeed a 1-0 FA Cup third round victory in January 1998 had been the last victory before this weekend.
During the intervening years Barnsley had drawn seven and lost seven.
This was the first victory at Bolton in 12 attempts stretching back to May 1994 and was the Reds first ever victory at Bolton’s current stadium.

Bolton manager Ian Evatt said:
“It’s been a really frustrating month. We wanted a bit of a cup run and that’s not happened for us,”
“October performance-wise was disappointing. But if a disappointing month looks like three wins and a draw out of seven then it’s not so bad.
“We know there are huge amounts of improvement to come.
“I think the players know that themselves. We are all honest. We understand. We’re not deluded and papering over cracks.
“We know there’s lots of improvement to come that needs to come in this group of players and this team and we will keep striving and working really hard to make sure that happens.
