Burton 2-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 09 April 2023 By Rob Miles

Barnsley’s automatic promotion hopes took a severe blow as they suffered a second defeat in three outings and back to back away reverses.

The Reds have now lost as many league games in their last three matches as they had in the previous 18.

It is only the second time this season they have lost successive away matches, also doing so v Plymouth and Derby in their opening two away games of 2022-2023.

Barnsley have the third best away record in League One this season with this only their sixth reverse, prior to these back to back losses they had gone six without defeat on the road.

This was Barnsley's 10th league defeat of the season, only once in the last 41 years have they remained in single figures for defeats and that was 2018-2019 when they lost only seven.

The Reds were denied a stonewall penalty to take the lead when John Brayford handled James Norwood's effort on the line, it means they have now gone 49 league matches without being awarded a penalty. It last occurred on the 12th March 2022 when Carlton Morris scored from 12 yards v Fulham.

Barnsley’s goal came after 89minutes, the 10th time they have scored in the 85th minute or later this season and it is the first time it has been a consolation (W8 D1 L1)

It is the fourth time Nicky Cadden has scored for the Reds and the first time they have not won when he has netted.

This was only the ninth time this season a Barnsley league game has been 0-0 at half time and the first time the Reds have gone on to lose (W5 D3 L1)

This was Barnsley’s first defeat in six Good Friday matches (W1 D4) last losing on this day against West Ham in 2012 (did not play on Good Friday in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017)

Barnsley have conceded the opening goal in 12 of their 39 league games so far this season and have failed to win any (D2 L10)

Max Watters (81) and Mads Andersen (90) picked up yellow cards, the 32nd and 33rd yellow cards that Barnsley have received in the final 10 minutes of games this season (all comps)

The opposition goalkeeper has been yellow carded in two of Barnsley's last three matches (Exeter's Blackman and Burton's MacGillivray), prior to this no opposition keeper had been booked for 94 league matches.

Barnsley were unbeaten in their first six meeting with Burton Albion (W3 D3) between 2014 and 2017 however have lost three of the five meetings since (W1 D1)

The Reds have only ever won once at Burton and have lost there on each of their past two visits – both in League One.

Barnsley had 60% possession in this game, only at Charlton (61%) and Morecambe (63%) have they had more away from home this season – all three games resulted in defeats.

Barnsley had 20 shots, their most in 15 outings (23 at Charlton)

Nine were on target, their most in a league game this season and most since Peterborough at home in April 2022 (11)

It is their most in an away game remarkably since their visit to Stamford Bridge in the League Cup in September 2020 (9) - a game they lost 6-0.

Barnsley won 12 corners, only at Accrington on Boxing Day (16) have they won more this season.

Barnsley committed 18 fouls, their most in a game this season and most since the 2nd April 2022 v Reading (19)
