Burton Albion 1-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 22 September 2024 By Rob Miles

Barnsley scored their first last minute winner since February as they continued their solid start to the season to keep pace with the division’s top two.

This was the first time Barnsley have won a game after 90minutes or later since the 10th February when Adam Phillips scored a late brace after 88 and 95 to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win over Leyton Orient.

It is Barnsley’s first last minute winner on the road since the 1st October 2022 when Jack Aitchison won it at the death at Fleetwood.

Barnsley have won four of their opening seven league games of 2024-2025 – three of them now by a 2-1 scoreline, six of their 21 victories last season were by that scoreline.

Barnsley have an identical record after seven games of 2024-2025 as they did in 2023-2024 (W4 D1 L2) they have however scored four goals less and conceded three goals more this campaign.

Barnsley have won as many as three of their opening four away games of a season for the second successive season, they won three and drew one of their first four last season compared to winning three and losing one this season.

Nobody has scored more than Barnsley’s seven away goals in League One so far this season – Birmingham, Huddersfield and Blackpool also have seven.

Luca Connell opened the scoring by curling home a low free-kick – of his last three goals for the Reds two have come at the Pirelli Stadium whilst four of his five goals for the club have now come away from home with Barnsley winning all four games. The only Oakwell game he has netted in was the opening day 2-1 defeat to Mansfield.

The last minute Humphrys winner was his first for the club and the first by a substitute since Sam Cosgrove against Bolton in last season’s play-off first leg. Excluding playoffs the last goal by a substitute came from Fabio Jalo against Reading on the 13th April, whilst the last one on the road was a brace from John McAtee on the 1st April… also at Burton.

Seven games in and only the division’s top two Wrexham (14) and Birmingham (13) have scored more than Barnsley’s 12 however the Reds have conceded the most in the top seven and are the only ones to have hit double figures for goals conceded.

The Reds are one of four teams in the division to have now hit double figures for both goals scored and conceded along with Mansfield, Wycombe and Blackpool.

Josh Earl picked up a yellow card after just three minutes, the earliest booking for Barnsley since Mael de Gevigney was also booked after three minutes at Bolton on the 3rd February.

Speaking of de Gevigney he was also booked at the Pirelli and has now been shown a yellow card in three of his six appearances this season including in both of the last two league matches.

Earl has made 10 appearances this season so far and has a remarkable record with yellow cards – he was booked in the season opener with Mansfield then went two games without a booking before being booked against Northampton before again two matches without a yellow before being booked against Bristol Rovers and then again went two matches yellow free before his booking at Burton.

Fabio Jalo came on after 60 minutes but then had to be replaced after 83, the first sub to be subbed since Josh Benson at Derby on the 11th November 2023.

Barnsley and Burton have now met 14 times and the Reds have won 50% (7)

The Reds have won three successive meetings for the first time.

Barnsley won only one of their first five visits to the Pirelli (W1 D2 L2) however have now won successive visits there for the first time.

The first two meetings at the Pirelli finished 0-0 but both teams have scored in each of the subsequent five clashes there.

Each of Barnsley’s last three away league games have produced 21 shots.

There were only 17 free-kicks awarded in the game (of which Barnsley scored directly from one) the lowest amount in a Barnsley game in 2024-2025 and lowest since Reading at home on the 13th April. It’s the lowest in an away game since last season’s visit to Burton (also 17)
