Barnsley's poor start to 2023 continued as they lost for the third successive times from three games in the new year.
It is the first time they have lost three matches in a row this season and first time since losing their last five of 2021-2022.
All three defeats in 2023 have come without scoring a goal, the first time they have lost three in a row without scoring since a run of four in January/February 2022 against Nottingham Forest (3-0) and Bournemouth, Cardiff and Huddersfield - all 1-0 defeats.
It is the first time Barnsley have lost thier first three games of a calendar year since 2010 (1-0 at Scunthorpe, Coventry 3-1 and Sheffield Wednesday 2-1)
It is the first time it has occurred without scoring since 2009 (3-0 at West Ham, 1-0 to Southampton and 4-0 at Norwich)
This was the eighth time Barnsley have been behind at half time in League One in 2022-2023, one more than in the entire 2018-2019 season when they were last in the third tier.
The Reds have lost back to back League One games for the second time this season and on both occasions failed to score. They also lost back to back league games twice in 2018-2019 however never lost three games in a row in all competitions.
Josh Benson only lasted 39 minutes, the third time he has been replaced in the first half this season.
Liam Kitching picked up his nineth booking of the season, one more than he picked up in 2021-2022, he has now received 17 yellow cards in 64 appearances for the club plus one red card.
Barnsley have only ever won three times at Charlton, from 27 visits and they all came in successive visits between 2008 and 2014.
This was their 16th defeat there and third in a row.
Despite the defeat Barnsley had 23 shots (although only two were on target) their most shots in a game in 2022-2023 and most since November 2020 at Blackburn (also 23 and also another away game they lost)
In total there were 31 shots in the game, the most in a Barnsley match since 13th September v Port Vale (32)
There were six shots on target in a Barnsley game for the third time in four games.
There were 30 fouls, the most in a Barnsley game this season and most since the 2nd April 2022 v Reading (31)

“It had a bit of everything, didn’t it? First of all I’m really pleased with the three points and the clean sheet.
“We had some adversity to deal with. Sess felt something at the back of his knee right at the end of the warm up. Sean came into the starting 11 and we had to sort set-pieces. We were calm in that moment, no problem. I speak to the players every day about dealing with the moment in front of you. That was a prime example.
