Coca-Cola Championship Matchday Eleven: Barnsley 2-1 Ipswich

Last updated : 04 October 2009 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Ipswich must be sick of the sight of Barnsley and Oakwell in particular after they were denied a point by a last gasp strike for the second time in four visits.

Back in November 2006, a last minute strike from Grant McCann earned a 1-0 win and then this afternoon, in the sixth minute of injury time Jon Macken fired home to bag Barnsley their first back to back wins since last December.

In truth they deserved it because luck seemed to desert the team at crucial times, whether through missed chances, or Iain Hume's penalty smacking the crossbar. Amazingly The Reds have gone from missing just one penalty out of 36 to missing four of their last seven.

The game was momentous for other reasons however. Hume bagged his first goal from open play since last October- and what a fine strike it was- whilst Ryan Shotton put in another terrific Man of the Match performance. Credit must also go to
Ipswich who certainly didn't look like a team without a win this season and are nowhere near the worst team in this division.

It was Barnsley who started off on the front foot this afternoon and continued on from their excellent 3-1 win over West Brom on Tuesday.

It took just nine minutes for the breakthrough and it came via a wonderful effort from Hume. Jon Macken showed great strength to get the ball through to Hume, who wriggled himself a couple of yards of space before a curling a left footed effort across Richard Wright and into the far corner from
25 yards. It had goal written all over it as soon as he hit it, and you could see what it meant to him and the Oakwell faithful who belted out the famous HUUUMEEE chant.

In a pretty dominant first half there were only really two worries for The Reds. On loan keeper Bartosz Bialkowski terrified everybody when he came for crosses- it was also his weak punch that allowed Ipswich to score their equaliser. The other worry is the form of Hugo Colace. Such a fantastic player last season he looks a shadow of that tough tackler. This season the Argentine has just seemed to do a "Togwell" and run up to opponents without actually making a challenge and his passing is well below par. In the last two games Nathan Doyle has compensated for him, but the midfield was over-run at times in the second half today, and it will be when it looks like your only playing with three midfielders!

The Reds went close to making it 2-0 on the half hour when a fine corner from Hume- finally The Reds have somebody who can take set-pieces- was met by a fierce header from Stephen Foster which clipped off the top of the crossbar and over.

Foster then had to react at the other end of the pitch to atone for an awful error. Carlos Edwards played a low right cross into the Barnsley box and for some bizarre reason the Reds skipper jumped over the ball, with Alan Quinn stood waiting behind him. Foster redeemed himself with a fantastic block as the former
Sheffield Wednesday and United man shaped to shoot.

The game though changed at the end of the first half through two decisions. Firstly Bialkowski and Ipswich's Tamas Priskin chased a ball which the Polish keeper got to well before the striker, but Priskin flicked out his boot right into Bialkowski's face. It was a shocking challenge which inexplicably the referee - Phil Gibbs who had a poor game just gave Priskin a yellow card. Moments later the Tractor Boys had their leveller.

Grant Leadbitter fired in a free kick that Bialkowski punched straight back into the middle of his area and Liam Rosenior gratefully headed in.

Ipswich
could even have taken the lead before the half-time whistle when Edwards fired just wide.

The goal certainly changed the complexion of the game with Ipswich enjoying more of the possession after the break but Barnsley had by far the best chances. On 58 minutes Hume nearly sailed a corner straight in but Jaime Peters managed to head off the line, whilst Macken missed an absolute sitter when Shotton's long throw dropped to him four yards out. Somehow he hooked his effort wide.

It looked like The Reds luck and chance of three points had really gone on 71 minutes. Liam Trotter slipped in the area and Hume fell over him for what looked like a pretty harsh penalty. The little Canadian who had dispatched a confident penalty on Tuesday night could not repeat the feat against Richard Wright- who famously saved Darren Barnard's spot kick at Wembley in 2000. Hume managed to deceive Wright by sending him the wrong way but in aiming for the top corner, he only found the crossbar.

Many times down the years Reds fans have seen their side dominate a game but lose to a late strike and it looked like it might happen again when Pablo Counago had a great chance in the first minute of injury time. Somehow Bialkowski made a tremendous stop with his legs and the drama continued with the last kick of the game.

Jacob Butterfield sent in a free kick which was only half cleared and to the absolute derlium of 12,000 supporters Macken lashed the rebound home!

After back to back home wins it seems the international break has come at the wrong time, but on the resumption The Reds tackle trips to teams well within their reach- Doncaster and Nottingham Forest. Good results in those two could really ignite the season. It's far too early to forget the slumps at Watford and QPR, but it does seem like the feel good factor is back at Oakwell!

Player Ratings:

Bartosz Bialkowski: Looks incredibly shaky with balls into the box and made a mess of the free kick that led to Ipswich's equaliser. But set the platform for the win with a magnificent stop at the start of injury time with the scores still level. Probably his last game. 6

Carl Dickinson: Another solid game. Good in the tackle and the air. 7

Stephen Foster: Only the crossbar denied him a goal and he was an absolute rock at the back… apart from one moment when he inexplicably stepped over the ball but recovered to make an outstanding block. 100th Barnsley appearance for the captain. 7.5

Darren Moore: Like a fine wine, is getting better with age. Was outstanding. Made some terrific tackles and won everything in the air. 8

Ryan Shotton: Mark this boy out as a future star. Second Man of the Match performance in a row. Really pleasing to see us with a good full-back for once. 9

Adam Hammill: Started off brightly running at the Ipswich defence, but faded in the second half. Still not up to his form from last season. 6

Hugo Colace: A major worry. Is way, way below his best. Just ran around in circles for 90 minutes. 4

Nathan Doyle: It's a good job he is in the midfield with Colace playing so poorly. Battled hard and put in some strong tackles. 7

Jamal Campbell-Ryce: Had a decentish game. A couple of probing runs but wasn't really on the top of his game. Clearly better than in recent appearances. 7

Iain Hume: What an afternoon for him! Scored his first goal from open play in a year and then missed a penalty. But he was outstanding as always. Never seen a striker who works so hard. 8

Jon Macken: Looked to have missed his best chance when stabbing wide from two yards but was in the right place at the right time in the 96th minute to blast home the winner. 7

Substitutes:

Jacob Butterfield (for Campbell-Ryce 66) Took him a while to get up with the pace of the game but delivered the free kick that led to the last gasp winner. 6

Emil Hallfredsson (for Colace 66) Evidently we have missed him! He looked really good when he came on and won control of the midfield for The Reds. Great to have him back. 7.5

Julian Gray (for Doyle 85) Added more pace on the wing and certainly looks more dangerous in midfield. 6

Unused Substitutes:

Luke Steele, Rob Kozluk, O'Neil Thompson, Daniel Bogdanovic.

Sponsors Man of the Match: Ryan Shotton

BarnsleyBoy's Man of the Match: No arguments with the sponsors on this one. Shotton was outstanding

IPSWICH TOWN: R. Wright, Rosenior, Peters, McAuley, Smith, Quinn (Martin 84), Leadbitter, Trotter, Edwards (Stead 74), Walters, Priskin (Counago 61).

Subs: Lee-Barratt, Colback, Balkestein, D.Wright.

Most Impressed by Ipswich's: Jaime Peters: Pace and skill and was always a danger on the wing

Ref Watch: Phil Gibbs: Some strange decisions from a referee I've personally never heard of before. 4
