Crawley 5-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 15 February 2015 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

This was Barnsley’s seventh successive away defeat, their worst run for three years. They also lost seven in a row between 4th February 2012 and 31st March 2012.

Barnsley suffered their heaviest defeat at this level since a 5-0 defeat at Port Vale in April 2005.

The Reds conceded as many as four second half league goals for the first time since a 6-0 home defeat to Charlton in April 2013.

Barnsley enjoyed the most possession for only the second time on the road this season, yet suffered their heaviest defeat.

Barnsley conceded a goal on the stroke of half-time for the fourth time this season; they have lost all four matches.

They did manage to score their first away goal in five matches. Kane Hemmings effort pulled the score back to 3-1. It is the first time Barnsley have not won when Hemmings has scored (W4 L1)

However Barnsley have only scored more than once in ONE of their 15 away matches this season- at Coventry in August when they scored twice. Only Crawley with 11 have scored less than Barnsley’s 12 away goals this season.

The Reds managed five shots on target, their highest on the road since the last time they had managed to score, at Walsall in December.

Barnsley had an incredible eight corners at Crawley, their joint highest total on the road this season.

Even more impressive considering they conceded five goals was that Barnsley did not concede a single corner, the first time this has happened since they defeated Leeds 2-0 at Oakwell in January 2013.

Barnsley slipped to 19th position, and just four points off the relegation zone. Three of the four teams currently occupying the drop zone won yesterday.

They are at their lowest position in the football pyramid at this stage of a season since 2003.

They have dropped this low on the back of six defeats in the last nine and they have lost three on the bounce for the first time this season.

Ross Turnbull conceded five goals for the third time in his career (once for Crewe, Middlesbrough and Barnsley)

Izale McLeod now has four goals against Barnsley this season following his hat trick yesterday, only the second of his career.

He is the first player to score a league hat trick against Barnsley since Matty Fryatt for Hull in April 2012.

This was Crawley’s seventh win of the season, but only the second by more than one goal.

Two of those seven have come against Barnsley following a 1-0 win at Oakwell on the opening day of the season.

It is the first time they have scored five in a league match since October 2011 and their biggest win since March 2011.
