Barnsley’s run in the FA Cup for 2022-2023 ended at the third round stage following a 3-0 humbling at fellow League One outfit Derby County as the Reds conceded from a penalty for the FOURTH game in a row.
It is the first time since 2018-2019 (when they were last in League One) that they have failed to make it past the third round however the seventh time in the last 10 seasons.
This was Barnsley’s heaviest FA Cup defeat since a 4-1 third round exit at Millwall in 2017-2018.
Barnsley have conceded three goals in successive games for the second time this season, the first time this has occurred since 2019-2020.
Jack Walton made his nine appearance of the season, one team has scored at least three goals in six of those nine games (Barnsley 3, opponents 3)
Barnsley have conceded three goals in each of the EFL Cup, EFL Trophy and FA Cup this season when Walton has played.
Barnsley have started a calendar year with back to back defeats for the first time since 2012 when they lost 2-0 at Doncaster in the Championship and then were knocked out of the FA Cup 4-2 by Swansea.
This was Barnsley’s second defeat in six on the road, both have come in cup competitions.
It is only the second time this season they have gone back to back games without scoring – the other was a three game run in October against Bolton, Morecambe and Lincoln.
It is the first time they have started a calendar year with back to back blanks since 2019.
Barnsley have now lost three successive meetings with Derby and have only won two of the last 10.
They have now lost eight of their last nine trips to Pride Park – the exception a 2-0 victory in November 2020.
However it is only the third time in those eight defeats that they have failed to score themselves.
This was the second time the two sides have met in the FA Cup and Barnsley actually fared much better than the previous clash in 1897 when the Rams thumped the Reds 8-1 in the first round.
There were eight shots on target in the game, the most in a Barnsley match since their FA Cup second round tie against Crewe (10)

Derby manager Paul Warne said:
“I thought for the first 15, 20 minutes Barnsley were superior to us, they won all the second balls and Joe pulled us out really with a save from a corner that kept us in the game,” the Derby boss said.
“As the game progressed we got better and the midfielders got to grips and I thought in the second half we were really good, we had a real energy about us and the lads should take a lot of confidence from the game.
“I don’t think the scoreline flattered us, however it is a good warning sign, it’s always great to win and learn and what I think we’ve learnt in the dressing room was we were just a little bit complacent in our start.
