A stunning first half display from Barnsley saw them advance into the knockout stages of the Papa Johns Trophy as Northern Section Group E winners.
This is the second time Barnsley have played in this competition since it introduced a group format and they have won their respective group on both occasions – also winning Northern Section Group F in 2018-2019.
Barnsley have now lost only one of their last 16 EFL Trophy matches (excluding penalty shootouts) W9 D6 – the 3-0 loss to Lincoln in their first match of this season.
This victory was secured by an emphatic first half display in which Barnsley were 4-0 ahead at the break, the first time they have netted four goals away from home since winning 4-1 at Gillingham in League One on the 9th February 2019.
It’s the first time they have been four goals ahead at half time in any game since the 22nd January 2000 when they led Blackburn 4-0 after just 32 minutes on their way to an eventual 5-1 victory.
It was also the first time they have been 2-0 up inside 20 minutes away from home since the 15th December 2020 at Rotherham (2-0 up after 15 minutes) and been 3-0 up before half an hour home or away since the 22nd April 2019 at Plymouth.
This was Barnsley’s fourth successive away win (all comps) their best run on the road since a run of six between February and April 2021.
They are now unbeaten in five on the road, (W4 D1) for the first time since that six match winning run.
This is the second time Barnsley and Doncaster have met in the Football League Trophy and between them the two meetings have produced 13 goals, with Rovers winning 5-2 at Oakwell back in 2005.
The Reds are now unbeaten in four meetings with Doncaster (all comps) W2 D2 and have lost only two of the last nine W2 D5.
This was though their first win at the Keepmoat in six visits – prior to this run they had won each of their first three trips there.
Josh Martin and Fabio Jalo both netted braces, the first Barnsley players to net a double this season and since Amine Bassi against Middlesbrough in February.
They are the first to do so away from home since Daryl Dike at Luton in April 2021.
It is the first time two Barnsley players have scored braces in the same game since December 2005 when Paul Hayes and Martin Devaney both scored twice in a 5-3 FA Cup Second Round replay success.

Doncaster manager Gary McSheffrey said:
“I thought we started the game pretty well in terms of knocking the ball around but before you know it, we’re one down, two down, three down and four down.
“Barnsley were really clinical and sharp on the counterattack. They pressed well from the front and backed it up with the next unit.
“We continued to move the ball and pass it about without getting up the pitch too much.
“We got punished from two or three individual errors and they were ruthless with their finishing on the counter.
“They made good decisions, playing off limited touches. The difference was that they were really clinical.”
