Barnsley have now won just one of their last eight opening day fixtures and this is the second time in four years they have been thumped 4-0. They also lost 4-1 in the first game of the 2007-2008 season and lost 4-0 at Bradford on the opening day of 2001-2002…. When they were relegated from the second tier.
New signing Dale Jennings was red carded just five minutes after coming off the bench. Goalkeeper Ben Alnwick was sent off in the first game of last season- although that was a League Cup tie. Barnsley have now had three players sent off on the opening day in the last six years. The other being Marciano Van Homoet at QPR in 2008-2009.
Today’s defeat was only the fifth time the two sides have met in league competition, and Barnsley have failed to win any of them!
The Reds also failed to have a single shot on target this afternoon.
It is to be hoped today’s result did not dampen the optimism around the club- the attendance of 13,096 was the club’s highest for the first home game of the season for 12 years, again the year they were relegated.
The attendance today was more than The Reds pulled in, in 20 of last season’s 23 home games.
