These away wins are like buses, you wait three months for one and then two come along at once as Barnsley won two away games in a row for the first time in almost 12 months. Last March they followed up a 3-1 win at Reading with a 4-1 hammering of Yeovil.
To put the past week into perspective though this is the first time in ELEVEN years that Barnsley have won two away games in a row accompanied by two clean sheets. The last time was way back in December 2004 when they won 2-0 at Colchester and 1-0 at Torquay.
Overall Barnsley have now won three league games in a row for the first time this season and indeed the first time since February 2013 when they won four.
They have done it by keeping three successive clean sheets, it is the first time these two have gone hand in hand for three successive matches for NINE years when they defeated MK Dons, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City all by a 2-0 scoreline.
All three shutouts have come with Adam Davies in goal. The 22 year old has now kept five clean sheets in 12 league appearances this season. Ross Turnbull has managed only four from 22.
It was Barnsley’s fifth away win of the season, beating last season’s tally.
They have now kept five away clean sheets this season, their best tally since the 2008-2009 season when they also kept five.
Barnsley restricted to Gillingham to just one shot on target, their best record on the road since their first away game of the season when Crewe managed only one (albeit they scored with it) in Barnsley’s 2-1 success.
A Barnsley match was goalless at half time for the third match in a row; they have gone on to win all three. Prior to this they had won only one game that was goalless at half time this season.
In all competitions Barnsley have gone 16 games without a draw, their longest run since they went 25 without a stalemate between 1st October 2011 and 3rd March 2012.
Barnsley enjoyed the most possession for only the fourth time on the road this season.
Barnsley also improved on a wretched record at Gillingham. This was only their third ever win there, although two of those have now come in their past two visits.
The Reds also defeated the division’s form side. Gillingham were unbeaten in eight League One matches before yesterday and this was their first defeat under the management of Justin Edinburgh.
It was also the Gills first home league defeat in 2015.
Gillingham failed to score for the first time in 22 games in all competitions.
Barnsley completed a league double over Gillingham for only the third time ever. 2014-2015, 2005-2006 and 1969-1970.
