Grimsby eased their relegation worries by trouncing old rivals Barnsley 6-1 after missing a penalty and both sides being reduced to 10 men at Blundell Park.
As well as seven goals and a sending off for either side, Barnsley also had Gary Monk carried off with a suspected broken leg on a miserable afternoon for the Tykes.
In a devastating first half Grimsby scored four times in 20 minutes after Phil Jevons had hit the post from the penalty spot.
Jevons made amends when he scored a superb goal on 22 and 31 minutes and Craig Armstrong’s header in between made the score 3-0.
To rub salt in to Barnsley's wounds their own striker Isaiah Rankin, on loan to Grimsby, scored a solo effort four minutes from half-time to make it 4-0.
Barnsley gave themselves fleeting hope when Daniel Nardiello pulled one back on 47 minutes, but Jevons restored the four-goal margin from the penalty spot on 54 minutes.
With 15 minutes left Jevons scored a brilliant effort to make it six. By this point Grimsby had also been reduced to 10 men when defender Tony Crane was stupidly sent off for reacting to a challenge and Premiership official Mark Halsey had no choice but to show him the red card.
Barnsley have now won just once in 12 games to put the pressure on manager Gudjon Thordarson and they now face a vital home game with Peterborough which, if they don't win, could put serious question marks against his future.
The contrast could not be greater at Grimsby where acting manager Graham Rodger has now steered his team to home wins against well placed Brighton, Luton and Barnsley with only a narrow last minute defeat to Bristol City blotting his copy book.
Next up for them is a visit to Notts County but a few more performances like this and they can put daylight between themselves and the bottom four.
