Huddersfield Town 2-0 Barnsley

Last updated : 06 October 2024 By Rob Miles

Barnsley made it three League One games without a win as another poor performance contributed to a Yorkshire derby defeat that drops the Reds to 11th in the table - their lowest third tier placing later in a season than August since they were 12th in February 2016.

It was another late show in terms of goals with Huddersfield's strikes coming after 83 and 90+6 minutes - the fifth successive league game in which they have conceded post 80 minutes - a total of six goals which has cost three points.

In a regular league season game the 83rd minute is the latest Barnsley have gone 1-0 down since the 19th February 2022 when Dominic Hyam secured a 1-0 win for Coventry after 93 minutes in the Championship.

It is the first time they have conceded twice past the 80th minute mark since April when Portsmouth netted after 83 and 89 in a 3-2 win for Pompey which secured them promotion.

Huddersfield's clincher after 90+6 is the latest league goal Barnsley have conceded since the final home game of 2023-2024 against Northampton when Louis Appere also scored after 90+6 to earn the Cobblers a 1-1 draw.

Barnsley have now hit the 10 game mark for the league season and the 15 goals they have conceded at this stage of a campaign is the most since conceding 17 after 10 games of 2019-2020 in the Championship.

Their tally of 15 points is their lowest after 10 games of a third tier campaign since 2015-2016 when they had 14.

Remarkably Barnsley have both scored and conceded 15 goals whilst accruing 15 points.

Fabio Jalo was shown a yellow card for a second half dive which means a Reds substitute has now been booked in eight of Barnsley's 10 league games so far this season.

Ex red Herbie Kane was also yellow carded after coming off the bench for Huddersfield meaning a player from both sides have seen a substitute booked in successive Barnsley matches with Jalo being the Barnsley culprit on both occasions.

Barnsley have now lost three successive meetings with Huddersfield in all competitions, scoring only once in that run.

It is their longest losing streak against the Terriers since a run of four between September 1962 and March 1957.

They have failed to win any of the last four meetings (D1 L3) prior to this they had won three in a row.  Those are the only wins in the last 11 meetings however (W3 D2 L6)

Barnsley have now lost six of their last seven visits to the John Smiths Stadium (W1) with that solitary victory coming without supporters in April 2021.

That 1-0 victory is their only clean sheet at Huddersfield in their last 10 visits.

Barnsley managed only two shots on target, their lowest in a league game this season and lowest in a regular league season game since the 9th April at Stevenage (also 2)

There have been 21 corners in each of Barnsley’s last two games.
