Barnsley have failed to progress beyond the second round of the League Cup for the 11th time in 13 seasons (4 second round exits, 7 first round exits)
Indeed only in 1962-1963 (R3) and 1980-1981 (R4) have they made it past the second round as a third tier club.
Since defeating Liverpool and Chelsea back to back in the FA Cup in 2008, Barnsley have faced Premier League opposition on 14 occassions in cup competitions (not including Premier League Under 21 sides in the EFL Tropy) and have lost 13 times – the one exception being a 3-2 League Cup Third Round victory against Burnley in 2009-2010. The aggregate score in those 13 ties is 11-41
Barnsley were already 1-0 down when they conceded a penalty that Mateusz Klich scored to put the Whites two goals to the good – it is the first penalty goal Barnsley have conceded from in a cup competition since Jack Bridge netted for Carlisle at Oakwell in the first round in 2019-2020.
Callum Styles had a chance to make it 2-2 following Mads Andersen’s header had halved the deficit however his spot-kick hit the post, the first Barnsley player to miss a penalty since Daryl Dike at Luton in April 2021 (not including shootouts)
This was the first Barnsley cup game in which there were three first half goals since September 2017 in a League Cup Second Round tie against Derby.
Barnsley have conceded three goals in successive games for the first time since the final two games of last season (1-3 and 0-4)
It is the first time that one side has scored at least three times in three successive games (Barnsley 3-0 Bristol Rovers, Barnsley 0-3 Wycombe, Leeds 3-1) Barnsley since November/December 2018 (Sunderland 4-2 Barnsley, Southend 2-4 Barnsley, Barnsley 3-3 Man City U21s)
Josh Benson assisted Barnsley’s goal as his freekick was headed home by Andersen, Benson’s fifth goal involvement (scored 3, assisted 2) in seven appearances this season.
There were 35,472 fans in attendance at Elland Road, the biggest crowd Barnsley have played in front of since the final game of 2016-2017 at Newcastle’s St James Park (52,276)
Following an unbeaten run of six matches against Leeds between November 2006 and December 2011 which included four wins, The Reds have now lost eight of the next 11 including each of the last five and seven of the last eight.
This run of five successive defeats is Barnsley’s longest ever losing streak against Leeds.
Barnsley have only scored two goals in those five defeats.
Barnsley have lost four successive games at Elland Road and five of the last six (D1)
They have won just once there in 12 visits (W1 D3 L8) a 2-1 win in November 2011.
Leeds enjoyed 71% possession, the most by a Barnsley opponent since Swansea enjoyed 74% in April.
Only four corners were won, the lowest in a Barnsley match since November 2021 (2) again against Swansea.
There have been exactly 20 fouls in three of Barnsley’s last five matches, with the other two games both having 22.

Leeds assistant manager Rene Maric said:
"I think in general the performance was was good, but we could have done better,"
"We were not as consistent over 90 minutes as we wanted to be. We always had some situations where we allowed the opposition to come into defensive third, things that we don't want to do.
"We had phases at the start of the second half, at the end of the second half, in the middle of the first half where we played more like what we want to do - pushing them into their half to keep them there and just be dominant in every phase."
