Two glorious opportunities squandered by the Reds were the story of a frustrating afternoon at the City Ground.
Well, that and Joe Garner's 36th minute header.
When the teams came out, Reds fans were left staggered as to why recent acqusition Jamie Cureton had to settle for a place on the subs bench to allow a start for the woeful Kayode Odejayi.
I'm going to dedicate the next couple of paragraphs to Kayode. He is perhaps the poorest player I have ever seen pull on a Barnsley shirt. Granted he's had his good games but these good games are painfully outweighed by his shocking displays that Reds fans are sick to the back teeth of.
Yes, he scored against Chelsea and will go down in Barnsley folklore for it, but altogether in a Red shirt, he has scored an embarrassing FIVE goals in 61 appearances in all competitions for the Reds. That's about a goal every 12 games, and as a centre forward that's just appalling.
Anyway, onto the game. The Reds looked perhaps the better of the two sides in the first half with Jamal Campbell-Ryce looking most dangerous, firstly having a deviating shot parried away and provided a perfect cross for Jon Macken.
Surely, the Reds fans thought, in the form he's in at the moment, would nod the ball in and put us 1-0 up. But no, unfortunately Macken completely missed the header and the ball trickled harmlessly out.
Anderson was pulling the strings for Forest. The winger on loan from Liverpool looked very sharp indeed, giving Bobby Hassell a bit of a mare at times, but most of the time Bobby looked rather solid.
The only goal of the game came on 36 minutes when Nathan Tyson got free down the left and produced a fine cross for Joe Garner to head past Heinz Muller to put the basement boys ahead.
The second half came, and so did the introduction of new boy Jamie Cureton. The 33 year-old looked very lively and made some clever off-the-ball runs. He was close to getting a shot away immediately but Forest fullback Joel Lynch got there before Cureton pulled the trigger.
Muller made a wonderful save to deny Lynch a spectacular goal just after Lewis McGugan's shot clipped off the top of the bar with Muller beaten.
Anderson de Silva brought a fine stop out of Lee Camp after he chested a loose ball and a volley had Camp sprawling across his goal to feather the ball round the post. I thought it was in.
Then the chance came. Shortly into the added on four minutes, Reds skipper Stephen Foster was presented with an opportunity wrapped in gold. A great cross by Campbell-Ryce was flicked on by a Forest head and Foster was left unmarked at the back post with Camp nowhere but the skipper headed off the bar and over.
A last chance saloon came the Reds way in the last minute of injury time. A free kick about 50 yards out that Anderson stood over. Muller was up, every white shirt bar Anderson and Kozluk was in the Forest area. The free kick evaded everyone and Camp pushed the ball to safety.
Frustration then. And with the next three games home to Reading, away to Swansea and away to Wolves, it may have been helpful for the Reds to have got something out of yesterday's game but it wasn't to be.
Player Ratings
Heinz Muller: Made one or two good saves but could've come for the cross that led to the goal. 6
Bobby Hassell: Quite impressed. Went about his business quietly. 7
Stephen Foster: Arghhh Fozzie! If only he'd scored that chance, this may have made better reading. Was pretty solid though at the back. 7
Dennis Souza: Good again, he's having a good season. 7
Robert Kozluk: Not very good again. As Rob says, he has picked up a trait from somewhere of backing off and I don't like it. Gave the ball away too frequently too. 4
Jamal Campbell-Ryce: Looked dangerous in the first half but just tries too much when on the ball in dangerous areas. 6.5
Hugo Colace: Poor. Didn't win many tackles and a lot of passes went astray. 5
Anderson de Silva: Our best performer on the day and was unlucky not to get his first Barnsley goal. Got stuck in well and passed the ball very well. 8
Simon Whaley: Started well but his performance started flagging a bit. Subbed for Cureton early in the second half. Subbed. 6
Jon Macken: Sweated blood again but should really have put the Reds 1-0 up in the first period. 6
Kayode Odejayi: Don't. Subbed.
Subs
Jamie Cureton (for Simon Whaley): Got half an hour plus, and looked lively. Get him in for Odejayi against Reading. 7
Maceo Rigters (for Kayode Odejayi): Replaced KO and didn't do a lot. Made his presence known but didn't look like scoring.
Unused: Coulson, Leon, Van Homoet.
Tykesmad's MOTM: Anderson. Ran the show in the second half, unfortunate to be on the losing side.
Nottingham Forest MOTM: Their Anderson, Paul Anderson was their best player. Looked sharp on the wing and gave Kozluk a torrid time in the second half.
Ref: Phil Crossley. Gave things to Forest that we weren't getting. A second half chant summed up our luck with refs at the moment. 4
