Peterborough United 1-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 04 December 2022 By Rob Miles

Barnsley moved up to fourth in League One and the “best of the rest” as the gap to third is eight points with their fourth successive league victory.

It is the first time the Reds have won four successive league games since a run of six in the Championship between 14th February and 6th March 2021.

It was also their sixth win in seven outings in all competitions with a Papa John’s Trophy defeat at Port Vale the only blip.

Barnsley have won half of their League One away games so far this season (5 from 10), only Ipswich (7) and Sheffield Wednesday (6) have won more away League One matches this season.

This was Barnsley’s first victory on a Friday in seven such matches (D4 L2) their last Friday victory prior to this also came in League One, 2-1 v Shrewsbury on Good Friday 2019.

Luca Connell gave the Reds the lead after 11minutes, his first goal for the club but his fourth direct goal involvement (3 assists)

The second was scored by Adam Phillips who bagged his fifth goal in his last six appearances.

Prior to Barnsley’s last league outing they had not won a game in which the score was 1-1 at half time since November 2021 however have now done it in successive league games for the first time remarkably since the opening two league games of 1996-1997.

Peterborough’s equaliser was the 16th league goal they have conceded this season and the Reds now have the joint best defensive record in the division along with Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton and Derby.

Barnsley have reached double figures for league victories after 19 games, the quickest they have reached this mark since 2018-2019 when they reached it after 17 games.

Barnsley have now lost only one of their last six meetings with Peterborough (W4 D1)

This is the first time in those six meetings that both sides have scored and only the second in which Barnsley have conceded.

Barnsley have won two of their last three visits to London Road (D1) and have now won seven of the last 11 trips (D1 L3)

Barnsley had only four shots in the game, their lowest in 2022-2023 and lowest since the final game of 2021-2022 (3)

For the fifth successive away league game Barnsley restricted their opponent to just one shot on target – however that one shot has produced a goal in two of them.

There were only five corners, the lowest in a Barnsley league game this season and lowest since December 2021 v Blackburn (also 5)

Peterborough manager Grant McCann said:

“The reality is, we need to improve. We’ve been on a terrible run over the last six games, losing five of them.

“Three have been in the league, which is really frustrating for us. It was an opportunity for us to go four ahead of Barnsley tonight.

“There was nothing in the game until they went 2-1 up. It was two decent teams going hell for leather against each other. After that, we had nothing about us.”
