Life back in League One and Michael Duff’s reign started with a disappointing defeat in the South West.
This result also continued Barnsley’s dismal opening day away record – they have now failed to win on the opening day of a season when playing away since 1996-1997 when they won 2-1 at West Brom (D4 L9)
Indeed home or away they have won only seven of their last 27 opening day fixtures.
The opening goal in Barnsley’s season and indeed the only goal of the game came on 45minutes, the first time the Reds have conceded in the final regular minute of the first half since Huddersfield away in April.
Including last season Barnsley have lost six league games in a row, failing to score in four of those games.
They have failed to win any of their last seven away league games and have won only one of the last 26 (including playoffs)
New signing Nicky Cadden earned the first booking of the season after just 10minutes, the earliest in a game a Barnsley player has been yellow carded since Mads Andersen was booked after nine against Blackpool in April.
This was Barnsley’s first defeat in four meetings with Plymouth and only their third in 12.
It is also their first defeat in four trips to Home Park (W2 D1 L1)
There was an equal 50%-50% ball possession in the game, the first Barnsley match this has occurred in since March 2021 (at Wycombe)
Last time 50/50 share of possession

Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher said:
“We wanted to get off to a good start, and I thought it was a really good performance,”
“I thought we deserved our lead. They had a good opportunity where they hit the bar, and we rode our luck on that one, but I thought our first half performance was really good, we just didn’t manage to put chances away until Finn pulled a worldie out.
“In the second half they had a spell where they came into the game, which we knew they would, but we still created good chances – I just wish we could have scored one so I could relax a bit more!”
