Port Vale 1-3 Barnsley

Last updated : 05 November 2024 By Rob Miles

Barnsley have made it past the first round of the FA Cup in eight of the last nine seasons following another good away victory - this time at the home of the current League Two leaders who had won each of their previous five matches and were unbeaten in 11.

It would have technically been nine successive seasons past the first round if they had not been expelled last season for fielding an ineligible player as they did beat Horsham following a replay.

This was Barnsley's third successive away victory, the second time they have achieved this feat in 2024 and their sixth on the road in 2024-2025 (compared to only two at Oakwell)

Barnsley have now scored three goals in each of their last three FA Cup ties (3-3 and 3-0 v Horsham) and in four of their last five (also 3-0 v Crewe in 2022-2023) whilst at least one team has scored three in each of the last five as Derby beat the Reds 3-0 in the third round in 2022-2023.

The Reds have scored at least three goals in an away FA Cup tie in successive seasons for the first time since 2018-2019/2019-2020.

The Reds have lost only one of their last four FA Cup ties and only three of the last 11, winning seven.

They haven't lost their first FA Cup tie of a season since 2018-2019 when they were beaten 4-1 at Millwall in the third round.

Marc Roberts opened the scoring heading home a free-kick from Corey O'Keeffe, the centre half's fourth goal of the season, only once before has he netted more in a season - five for Halifax Town in 2013-2014 (he has also netted four for Halifax in 2014-2015, Barnsley in 2016-2017 and Birmingham in 2020-2021) - remarkably Roberts failed to score at all in the last two seasons.

This was Roberts’ 100th appearance for the club across two spells and his ninth goal - five of which have come away from home including three of his four this season.

Davis Keillor-Dunn restored the Reds lead after Vale had brought the scores level, his third goal in four games and second in the last three on the road.

Passage to the second round was secured from the penalty spot by Adam Phillips who has now scored in three successive appearances for Barnsley at Vale Park, all of which Barnsley have won and all have which have seen the Reds score three times with Phillips netting the third in two of them.

Phillips goal came after he was brought off the bench, the first Barnsley substitute to net an FA Cup goal since Carlton Morris netted a brace in a 5-4 third round win over Barrow in 2021-2022.

Remarkably Phillips introduction was the only substitution boss Darrell Clarke made, making him the first Barnsley manager to make only one change in a game since Daniel Stendel against Walsall on the 8th September 2018.

It is the first time it has occurred in an FA Cup tie since the first round of 2006-2007 at Southend.

Phillips is the first Barnsley player to score a penalty in the FA Cup since Cauley Woodrow in the third round of 2020-2021.

Barnsley have scored their last seven penalties in a row - four from Phillips and three from Herbie Kane. Devante Cole was the last Barnsley player to miss from the spot at home to Fleetwood in October 2023 however he did net from the rebound.

O'Keeffe set up the first two goals with crosses, becoming the second Barnsley player to assist two goals in a game this season after Kyran Lofthouse against Manchester United Under 21s in the Football League Trophy.

O'Keeffe now has five assists this season, seeing him leapfrog Luca Connell at the top of the assist charts in 2024-2025.

This was Barnsley’s 50th win against Port Vale (they have lost 47 encounters)

They have won each of the last four meetings, scoring three times in three of those meetings and seven in the other!

It is their longest winning streak against the Valiants since a run of six between March 1904 to October 1906.

Prior to this four match winning run they had won only two of 14 losing eight.

They have won three successive visits to Vale Park for the first time ever, scoring three times on each occasion (3-1, 3-2, 3-1)

Prior to this they had won only one of 10 trips, losing seven.

Barnsley have won 12 of 59 visits to Port Vale (20%) 33% of which have come in the last five visits.

There were only four corners in the game, the joint lowest in a Barnsley game this season (also Man United U21s in the Football League Trophy)

Port Vale failed to win any of them, the first time an opponent has had no corners against Barnsley since Carlisle at Oakwell on the 16th January and the first on their own patch since Charlton on the 14th January 2023.
