Port Vale 2-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 21 September 2014 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley slipped to 19th in League One after seeing their unbeaten away record end at Port Vale.

It was the Reds fifth successive defeat at Vale Park and they have now failed to win any of their last eight visits.

This defeat also set a new unwanted club record and makes Port Vale Barnsley's "worst" opponents. Yesterday's 2-1 loss was Barnsley's 33rd reverse at Port Vale in just 51 trips. They have never before lost 33 away games to one particular team. Incidentally that could be beaten if Barnsley lose at Bristol City in March. They have currently lost 32 of 43 visits to Ashton Gate.

This just the tonic Vale needed following the resignation of manager Micky Adams on Thursday. They ended a run of six successive defeats and it was their first home league win for six matches.

Barnsley have now gone four league matches without a win.

The 2-1 score-line suggests it was a close game especially with Port Vale's winner coming in the 89th minute. However the stats paint a far different picture. Ross Turnbull finally made his long awaited second Barnsley debut today and he faced an incredible 15 shots on target! It is the most shots on target that an opposition side has had against Barnsley since Leicester had 17 in December 2012.

Barnsley went in at the break behind for only the third time in eight league games but for the second match in a row

Conor Hourihane's penalty brought Barnsley level, the first time for three seasons it has taken until the eighth match to score from the spot.

The Irishman has now scored in five of The Reds last six league matches, and has six goals in his last six League One appearances.
