Barnsley’s woeful record at the home of their fierce rivals continued for yet another year. They have won just one of their last 15 visit to Hillsborough, stretching back 31 years. Yesterday was the 13th defeat in that run.
Wednesday’s winning goal came in the 97th and final minute of the match. It is the third time in nine trips that Barnsley have lost there via an injury time goal.
Referee Andre Marriner sent off three players in this controversial derby. There have now been nine red cards in the last 19 derbies between these two sides.
Debutant Emmanuel Frimpong was sent off just 30 minutes in, but he still does not beat Carl Regan for the quickest red card in this fixture. Regan last just 19 minutes after coming off the bench before being dismissed in a 3-1 defeat at Hillsborough back in 2001.
Remarkably Frimpong’s red card is not even the quickest by a Reds debutant THIS SEASON. Dale Jennings lasted just five minutes of his in the opening day defeat to Wigan.
For the second successive season Barnsley have seen two players sent off in the same game. Stephen Dawson and Tom Kennedy saw red in the 6-0 defeat to Charlton back in April.
The Reds have now been shown five red cards this season, the most since 2008-2009 when they also received five.
Mellis saw red in injury time yesterday, the first sending off of his career, however it was the FIFTH red card that Marriner had issued in his last three matches and his TENTH in just 26 games this season.
This was Barnsley’s first league defeat of 2014, whilst extending, Wednesday’s unbeaten run in all competition into double figures.
The Reds have now lost nine league games away from Oakwell this season, the joint most in the Championship.
The Reds drew a blank for the seventh time in 13 matches on the road. They have managed just nine goals away from home, the joint lowest along with Wigan and Doncaster.
