Shrewsbury Town 0-2 Barnsley

Last updated : 29 October 2024 By Rob Miles

Barnsley’s impressive away record rolls on as despite winning only one of their opening six league games at Oakwell, this victory at Shrewsbury was their fifth on the road from seven which gives them the best away record in League One currently.

It is the second successive season the Reds have won five of their opening seven away league games and they actually had a better record 12 months ago having drawn the other two whereas in 2024-2025 they have lost them.

This season Barnsley have scored 11 league goals on their travels, only Wycombe (13) have scored more.

The Reds broke the deadlock in first half injury time, the second time they have scored in this period having also done so at Crawley.

There has been a goal scored in either first half or second half injury time in each of Barnsley’s last five games in all competitions and in six of the last seven.

The game was sealed just three minutes after half time – the first time the Reds have scored in both the five minutes before half time and the five minutes after half time since the opening day of 2023-2024 when they scored bang on 45 and then 47 – two of seven goals they netted against Port Vale that day.

Barnsley have now scored five goals this season in the five minutes after half time (all comps)

Barnsley kept their first clean sheet in 11 matches in all competitions -  they have conceded 25 goals in the 10 matches in-between.

It is only Barnsley’s second league clean sheet of the season and both have come away from home.

Barnsley have led at half time in eight League One games so far this season and are unbeaten in all eight (W5 D3)

Overall they are unbeaten in their last 51 league matches in which they have led at half time (winning 36) last losing from this position at home to Nottingham Forest in September 2021.

In all competitions they have now played 18 games and at least one team has netted exactly two goals on 12 occasions (5x2-1, 3x2-0, 3x2-2 and 1x3-2)

Each of Barnsley’s last six games has seen either one or both teams net exactly two goals.

This was Barnsley’s 27th away league victory since returning to League One – one more than they have won at Oakwell in that time.

Luca Connell set up the Reds winner, his fourth assist of the season, putting him top of the Barnsley assist table in 2024-2025.

Barnsley have now won five of the last six meetings with Shrewsbury, drawing the other.

They have also won six of the last eight (D1 L1)

Since March 1987 the two sides have met 14 times with Barnsley winning 10 and losing only two.

The Reds have kept clean sheets in three of the last five meetings.

Barnsley are unbeaten now in three visits to Shrewsbury, winning two with both victories accompanied by clean sheets.

Prior to these three games the Reds lost 3-1 at Shrewsbury which followed another three game unbeaten record which included two wins.

Barnsley have lost only one of their last seven visits (W4 D2) however had lost four in a row prior to this and eight of nine.

There were only 15 shots in the game, the lowest in any Barnsley match so far this season.

However there has been seven on target in each of Barnsley’s last three away games in all competitions.

The Reds restricted to their opponents to only one shot on target for the second time this season (also Crawley)

There has been 23 fouls in successive Barnsley games and on four occasions this season.
