Walsall 1-3 Barnsley

Last updated : 22 May 2016 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley turned on the style to book themselves a return trip to Wembley in the League One Play-Off Final… exactly 10 years after the last time they made it to the showpiece game for a place in the Championship.

And just like that memorable night in Huddersfield a decade ago Barnsley sealed it with a 3-1 away victory.

It is the first time Barnsley have won both legs of the play-off semi-finals and they finished with a 6-1 aggregate success, incredibly the highest in the play-offs since Bristol Rovers defeated Fulham 5-0 (1-0 and 4-0) in the Third Division in 1988-1989!!

This victory continued The Reds incredible run on the road, they finish the 2015-2016 campaign unbeaten in nine on their travels (including six wins, two of them 3-1 at Walsall) and they lost just one of their final 14.

Home and away Barnsley are now unbeaten in eight matches (five wins) and have lost just three of 28 in all competitions in 2016.

Barnsley have led at half-time in each of their last three matches, prior to this they had held an interval lead just once in the previous seven.

Despite already holding a 3-0 lead, Barnsley accumulated 16 shots on goal and eight on target, it is the most they have managed on target away from home this season and 16 overall is their joint second most (behind the 23 at Peterborough)

If Barnsley do now go on to win promotion it will be the second season in a row that the Johnstones Paint Trophy winners have then gone on to secure promotion as Bristol City managed this feat. However it would be the first Football League Trophy/Play-Off triumph combination since Grimsby did it in 1997-1998- when Barnsley were a Premier League outfit.

Just like Swansea back in 2006, Barnsley are Football League Trophy winners and finished 6th in League One before reaching the final.
