The fortunes of newly named MK Dons may have also changed after they came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Barnsley at The National Hockey Stadium.
The visitors enjoyed a better first half and started brightly forcing four corners in five minutes. Paul Reid went closest heading just wide from a Stephen McPhail corner.
MK Dons were forced to react, and were unlucky not to snatch the lead when Allan Smart's free-kick found new signing Izale McLeod in acres of space, but the former Derby man squeezed his shot wide of the post.
On 20 minutes Barnsley thought they had taken the lead when Barry Conlon connected to a Tom Williams cross only for the referee's assistant to rule it out offside.
Barnsley did not have long to wait before going ahead when Paul Reid hit the target two minutes later. The defensive midfielder rose highest in the Dons box to steer the ball past Paul Rachubka, after Chris Shuker had supplied the corner.
The Don's, keen to forget last season's poor performance, looked for an opening and McLeod proved the most likely to even the scores. The sprightly striker took advantage of a wayward pass on the halfway line before surging forward only to fire his shot straight into the arms of goalkeeper Nick Colgan.
The Dons raised their game in the second half and after four long range efforts McLeod was gifted an equaliser.
Colgan, capped eight times by the Rep of Ireland, looked comfortable when attempting to collect Ben Harding's cross only to fumble the ball leaving McLeod with the simple task of putting the ball into the vacant net.
