A quite magnificent and vital result for Barnsley at Huish Park lifted The Reds to within goal difference of escaping the relegation zone- albeit having played two games more than fourth bottom Charlton.
To highlight how poor this season has been 22nd place is Barnsley’s HIGHEST position since SEPTEMBER! They have not been out of the relegation zone since the end of August.
This time last week Barnsley had the worst away record in the Football League, now they have won more away games this season than six of its 72 members.
They have also got a massive monkey off their back by finally putting together successive victories for the first time this season, and the first time in 13 months! The last time they managed it was as part of a six game winning streak in January/February 2013.
It is the first time they have followed up a midweek away win with another on the following Saturday since November 2010 when they won 2-1 at Preston and then 3-1 at Ipswich. They went on to win their next match too, at home.
Before these last two matches The Reds had failed to score in four out of five, they have now hit seven in just two.
I wrote on Wednesday that Tuesday night’s 3-1 win at Reading was their biggest away triumph since the 5-0 thumping of Birmingham 18 months ago… but now yesterday’s 4-1 victory surpasses that. It is the first time they have scored four or more goals in a game since that match at St Andrews Stadium in September 2012.
Liam Lawrence’s wonder strike was his first goal in over a year. His last strike came for PAOK Salonika. Before yesterday his last goal in England came against Barnsley, for Cardiff in April 2012.
It’s a different story for The Reds fourth goal scorer, Dale Jennings. The former Bayern Munich man has hit three in six matches and has netted in back to back games for the first time in his career.
To complete the goal scorers’ story, Chris O’Grady’s brace was also significant. It ended a run of nine games without a goal for a Barnsley striker. It also ended O’Grady’s own personal nine match duck.
O’Grady now has 13 league goals this season, and he is the highest scorer amongst the bottom half sides. This was his fourth brace of the campaign.
Danny Wilson secured back-to back wins as Barnsley manager for the first time since seeing off Aston Villa and then Southampton in the Premier League in March 1998
This was Yeovil’s biggest home defeat for nearly two years since they lost 6-0 to Stevenage in April 2012.
It was only Barnsley’s second ever visit here and they picked up their first victory, after losing 2-1 in their other trip in 2005.
Yeovil have now lost 11 times at Huish Park this season, no other side in the Football League have lost as many home games. It is the first time the Glovers have EVER lost this many home games in one season.
Out of the four teams in immediate danger of relegation, Barnsley have won the most games in 2014 (5). Both Charlton and Yeovil have won three, Millwall just two.
It was a crazy day in the Championship. Out of the 12 games played, only ONE home team won, whilst three away sides netted four goals.
